I bought this lens with my Canon EOS 350D. I wanted a lens that would offer flexibility for every day shooting. This lens has not let me down. The build quality is excellent, as is the image quality. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

A great all-rounder lens, 8 Nov 2009

I bought this lens for my Nikon D50 camera with the intention of not having to change lenses, thus preventing any dust or dirt entering the camera body. The 18-200mm lens is a great all-rounder that is perfect for my photo requirements in both the wide-angle and telephoto end. This is the only lens that I need for general photography, and is well worth the money I paid for it.

This lens like all zooms of such a huge range is a comprimise. It is made for DSLR so is equivalent to a 28-300 lens in old money. It feels well made. has a good zoom lock. It is a little slow at long telephoto. Actually it is also soft beyond about 150 (220) .... It is worth thinkin also about the 18-125 Sigma. This is a little less versatile but is a sharper optic. increasingly i find i use the telephoto end less and less. If you a birder you will anyway need a longer telephoto.

However remember with DSLR there is a big problem with getting dust in th camera so sometimes an all in one lens can be very useful. If I was staring again i would purchase the Sigma 17-70 for all round use + Sigma 50-200 a recent excellent product from Sigma.

I bought by Sony Alpha camera recently with the standard lens that came with it and soon felt the need for a zoom lens for our holiday and sports pictures. I am glad I made the right choice. I use this lens now as my primary lens.

Useful lens for the money: used mainly for sports shots at Athletics and Rugby. Images really crisp 70 to 150, in most conditions at f2.8. Stop down to f4 in low light for long zoom shots and images still great. Frequently use the mount on a monopod, and find the quick release to switch between portrait and landscape handy.
After a couple of months use the Lens started to exhibit bizarre behaviour on autofocus: Sigma email support fantastic and quickly diagnosed an issue with the lens (and not user error) so returned the lens, and they replaced the autofocus motor under warranty, so back and working really quickly. 10/10 for customer care.

It was a choice between this lens and a Canon zoom Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens. Note that both are not equal in all ways. The Canon is only f4 while the sigma can go all the way to 2.8. The sigma also comes with a good quality mounting ring for use on a tripod (more on this later) plus a petal hood and a pretty nice case to store it in when not in your camera bag. The Canon accessories to get to the same functionality are pretty pricey so you need to include them in your decision. Canon Lens Hood ET-74 For The EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens and Canon TRIRINGA/W Tripod mount ring (white) for EF 70-200mm.

The sigma mount ring is really nice. It has a quick release mechanism and feels good quality. It can stay on the tripod the whole time so you can mount the camera easily when you need a bit more support. At full zoom I find a monopod or better still a tripod brings extra sharpness. This is because you need very fast shutter speeds to minimise the effects of camera shake when at full zoom. These shutter speeds are not always feasible unless you are outside on a bright day. I see other reviewers commenting about sharpness and potentially they have reported disappointing results not because of the lens quality but because the longer zoom length is significantly less forgiving of camera shake. I personally find the lens to be very sharp and it delivers very good pictures.

With F2.8 you can afford to increase shutter speed to levels beyond the Canon equivalent so you should find this lens is more usable without flash or tripod than the Canon. There is now also a stabilised version of this lens (or the canon one) but these are very expensive. Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM Lens for Canon Digital and Conventional SLR Cameras or Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens. I can see the worth of these lenses if you really want to be shooting handheld but they are both outside my hobbyist budget.

The focusing is quiet and quick and the feel of the lens build quality is very good. The lens is very heavy though so may not suit everybody looking for travelling light.

All considered, I'm pleased with this lens (my second lens from Sigma's top end range) and would recommend it to others as a better value for money alternative to the Canon kit.

great lens at an amazing price (compared to close to double for the canon 'L' equivilent) sharp as a tack, solid build, great range and very fast.

my one complaint is the sigma coating they use on all of their lenses which gets dirty quickly and i awful to clean.

Highly reccomended for anyone who is looking to expand their collection of lenses with a high quality telephoto that doesn't cost the earth

I have a Canon 10-22 mm as well and it's better quality, but not hugely better, it's significantly bigger & heavier, and both lenses are equally pleasant to use. For the trade-off between quality, size & weight the Zuiko is great. There is distortion at the shortest focal length, but it's surprisingly hard to spot. Curiously, on the holiday to Brussels where I took my first shots, it was the spheres of Brussels' famous Atomium monument that gave away the distortion, rather than straight lines in the corners of the frame. The resolution looked excellent, although I'm just a keen-ish amateur so I didn't pick over the details or do any precise tests. Overall, it seemed mean to withold the 5th star given the obvious & intentional trade-offs mentioned. This lens is a pleasure to use, and I would say that by absolute standards the image quality is 4.5 stars, the build quality 4 stars (but as good as it could be for the weight, and it definitely does NOT come across as a cheaply made lens) and the usability / pleasure 5 stars. I love my Canon lenses but got fed up of the weight of the Canon kit for certain kinds of trips abroad. The Olympus offerings are a fine alternative in this sense; this lens fits into that philosophy very effectively. It's the kind of lens where you look at it attached to the camera and think "that's cute, it just looks great" - shallow I know but there it is! And you may as well enjoy that aspect, given that the hard factors are more than respectable. One last thing - Olympus lens caps are excellent, very secure! Quite a costly lens, but most of similar spec are costlier still, and this for me, is well worth the money.

This lens has opened up a new world for me, helping to create some dramatic photos of buildings, skyscapes and nature. I especially like the way it stretches distance, giving plenty of sense of space. Depth of focus is considerable, allowing a foreground flower to dominate the shot with the backdrop receding away in the distance. The lens is small and light and fast to focus. The only problem is trying not to include your shadow if the sun is behind you.
