I bought a Canon 500D with the intention of using my Sigma 24-300 zoom lens with it. As the 500D is a 15mp camera, I thought the Sigma would be an ideal lens for it. How wrong! With the larger image size came more noticeable blurring, as the Sigma is not image stabilised. So I purchased a Tamron 18-270 DI, which is stabilised.
The first few shots taken with the camera/lens were no better that with the Sigma lens, still blurry, until I realised that there is a technique to using this lens. When you focus the camera the image through the viewfinder shakes, then freezes, and and soon as it freezes, you follow through with the shutter release. Result: perfectly focussed picture. If you leave the release too long after the composed frame has stabilised, you may find a slightly unfocussed image results, particularly on longer focal lengths. Then again, it could just be me!!
However, for me this is almost the perfect lens. I visited Italy recently, and could not take a bad picture there. From point-and-shoot snapshots to composed pictures, it was spot on.
It is worth noting that this lens is made for APS-C sized sensors, and will not fit full-frame type digital or film type cameras.

I have upgraded to this lens from the previous Tamron 18mm-200mm zoom lens which was very good. This lens does go the extra mile especially with IS (image stability), it does give me a bit extra zoom which is always useful. I do use this as my only lens because I am not a professional photographer but just like to be ready for most situations when they appear. I like taking techincally good pictures and this lens goes a long way to helping me do just that.
I have recently read an article in the magazine PhotoPlus (Canon Edition), they have reviewed this type of zoom lens, and this came out top.
The only down side to this lens it does seem a little heavy but just think about what you get in the lens to make it do what it does (weight taken from the Tamron web site - 550g (19.5oz)).

I bought this lens in preparation for a visit to Kew Gardens to capture a variety of plant forms on camera. It did not disappoint. Yes - it is quite heavy and does tend to creep when carried without the lock engaged - but its versatility outweighs such matters. From wide angle to close up this is my lens of choice. The image stabilisation is good enough to capture the detail in a buzzard's wing when hand held at maximum zoom.

In manual focus however the ring is very "slack" and not as easy to use - but with practice I am sure I will master it. Also I find the LOCK button which stops the lens creeping under its own weight when not in use rather fiddly to engage.

Looking for a general purpose lens for the CAnon EOS 450D - look no further than this lens - but shop around to get the best price!

i found this angle finder very useful as i take macro shots low down so no twisting your neck use mine on 450d the adaptors are a bit flimsy have to watch dont snap the retaining clips overall exelent piece of gear well made exelent optics recommended purchase

Bought this as just started to get into macro work.It`s a particular bonus if your DSLR does not have live view as this product also has a switchable magnification of 1x or 2x,aiding focusing,especially when working with the shallow depth of field in macro mode.
The unit itself feels quite sturdy,especially giving the price.The viewfinder adapter that fits onto the camera eyepice is quite a tight fit on my Nikon,but not overly so.There is some looseness where the angle finder attaches to the adapter,but not excessive.A minor price to pay,giving the cost of a genuine Nikon product.
Overall,very satisfied with the item.

I bought one of these to allow me to take low level, wide angle landscape shots. To use it on a Nikon D300 you need to slide off the D300's rubber eyepiece (pretty easy) then slide on the angle viewfinder. It comes with several different adapters to suit various cameras. They are all rather flimsy looking plastic mouldings, and frighteningly easy to lose, but I think tough enough not to snap easily. It attaches usably, but it is far from the firm attachment you might get with a metal clip. Once on the camera, you have a choice of two magnifications. One is 1x and the other is a magnified 2x. The annoying thing is that when switching magnifications, you need to re-focus the eyepiece. This makes it a little tedious, as you may want to use 1x to frame the shot them 2x to accurately focus manually (e.g. for macro work). Visibility through the eyepiece is bright and clear, but best in the central portion (which is what you need, to be honest). The eyepiece can be rotated through 360 degrees, so you can view from any angle, and the image is magically always the right way up. Construction is surprisingly sturdy. It is made from metal and plastic and contains real glass elements. It is screwed rather than glued, and the finish is to a comparatively good standard. This is not junk by any means. It does offer very good value for the money you're paying. The Nikon unit is very considerably more expensive - about 3-4x more. Cleaning the glass in the eyepiece and at the camera end is a little fiddly, but can be done, and there are no expensive coatings to worry about. If you plan to use it occasionally to get the odd interesting shot, I'm sure you will find it a useful accessory. If you want something you can use on a daily basis, then I believe you will be better off getting the Nikon unit. Note that I have only used this on a (DX) Nikon D300. I have no idea whether it would suit the larger FX viewfinder on a (FX) D700 or D3.

When i bought this i was disappointed, reason being was the weight, all the pictures i was taking were blurred, I could not keep the camera steady.
After putting the camera on a tripod, i was getting better results, but for hand holding the camera i was using my other lenses.
One day i took the Sigma 150mm lens, because i needed a fast lens, since that day i got used to it and it actually does not feel heavy any more, (maybe i was just used to the lighter lenses before)
I now use this lens all the time, it's so versatile, i use it for bird photography to macro photography for small insects.

Well recommended.

Lens does actually what is says and stabilises the images, result is much clearer pictures when compared to the non-IS lens particulary the 75-300mm zoom version. Quality is retained when cropping the pictures. Overall, an excellent lens and a satisfied customer.

I purchased this addition to my Canon lens two months ago,it has been a real joy to use.I have also used the 1.4 convertor with the lens,and it does slow the auto focus down a little but it is still very useable.I take landscape and wildlife shots around the Moray firth and Cairngorm mountains.
I shall shortly be taking it to Antigua so I am hoping for some impressive shoots whilst out there.
It arrived promptly and has it's own carry case,again high quality.The build standard of the lens is what you would expect from a Canon L series,controls are well placed and easy to operate.

It is also not too heavy to carry about,unlike it's big brother.For the price and the spectacular Bokeh the lens can produce,it is a great all rounder.

Having had the Sigma f4.5-5.6 120-400mm lens for over a year , i decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM for it's quality and it hasn't failed on that .This was something i lost between 300-400mm focus on the Sigma lens , you can alway crop your photos and the sharpnest is not lost with the Canon 300mm lens and works perfectly in low light. It's also a lot lighter on the arm tham the sigma 120-400mm if you are not using a Tripod or Monopod .

It also come with its own attached hood and tripod mount ring, thus saving some money their also compared to other Canon L Lens.
